Day 2 and 3

Yesterday I procrastinated. I did it really well. However, I did manage to eat the majority of my meals. I am having a hard time fitting in my second last meal of the day. Apparently, my timing is just off. I am going to eat that meal today. In fact I am going to start my fish cooking right now!

Day 2 I felt tired and a little bit off and headachy. I really felt a strong urge for caffeine but did not give in the desire for Tim Hortons Coffee. I can already tell that I am going to really struggle with letting go of my daily caffeine fix. This isn’t unusual. Every single time I try to eat healthy, I have to go through breaking my caffeine addiction. So yesterday I spent about 2 hours napping on the couch. Then I went for a run with my DM. It was nice for me to push the pace a bit... but he was finding the cardiovascular part of it pretty difficult. We are hoping that over the next few weeks we can get over the: dear God I’m going to puke up my lungs while they are on fire feeling.

Day 3 So far today I have felt really good. I am finding that my breakfast keeps me feeling full for a significant portion of the morning. Where I start to fall apart is the afternoon. I am really hungry in the afternoon. So, I ate two snacks over the course of the afternoon. I had my apple and I had my celery with all natural peanut butter. My fish is cooking so that I can eat it before the girls come over to work out. – I’m also not sure they are coming, as I have not heard from them.

From all the emails, it looks like EF and HF are doing well also. I have to say I wish I had a better listing of the plan for my DM. I think his overall difficulty is that he doesn’t eat enough calories during a day. He’s been hard at work since about 12:30 doing physical labour.

That’s Kate’s clean report for the day...only 18 more days to go..

21 days... Day 1

In the beginning....
I am 34 years old and I have some serious body issues. I also have some serious food issues. Those who know me well, know that I often feel uncomfortable in my skin and have traumatic visits to the mall looking for a pair of pants that fit. I am what I would describe as a potentially athletic pear shape. I have worked hard with several girls over the winter to develop considerable muscle tone. However, I still have a stubborn layer of fat covering up my hard work. This is particularly true on my legs. I think I should be completely honest here and tell you that I feel significant fear at the thought of wearing shorts above the knee or a bathing suit in public. This tortures me, and limits my life.

My relationship with food is an emotional one. My parents often used food as a reward or as comfort. I’m not blaming them, food in our home was generally healthy as I was growing up. We were also active in sports both at school and during the summer months. However, when I am under stress or having a chaotic day my first instinct is to go out to eat. I LOVE to eat out. If I had unlimited cash and had opportunity I would eat out for every meal. I think the best illustration of this would be when I was in teacher’s college and I wrecked my car. When my friend came to pick me up at the hospital (I cracked a collarbone) she asked me if I wanted to go to McDonalds for lunch...I did, desperately. I know I am falling off the healthy food wagon when I start leaving work to go pick up food. This will be my biggest struggle. I am a lifetime WW member. Although I know the plan works, I feel that the reason it worked so well for me was that I bought in. My last two attempts at WW have not been satisfying and I can’t get the motivation I once had.

My current weight is 149 lbs. My goal in 21 days is actually not to reach a number...although anywhere in the early 140s would be nice. My goal in 21 days is to lessen the percentage of fat on my body, eat cleanly and feel better. I find when I eat clean I am better able to handle stress, my body generally works better and I have more energy.

There are three people joining me on this adventure: my devoted man, my excellent friend, and her friend. (Hereafter referred to as DM, EF and HF). I have read Tosca Reno’s book – The Eat Clean Diet. The 21 day plan we are following was found in a copy of Oxygen magazine which is also attached to Tosca. I believe that clean eating is the key to better overall health. The article suggests that a person can lose up to 10 pounds in 21 days. I believe that can happen, however, I also know that losing 10 pounds in 21 days is not always the healthiest pace to lose weight and keep it off. So I see this as a jumpstart to eating cleanly long term.
Yesterday was day 1. I was not able to eat everything on our plan in the perfect order. I missed the final evening meal of berries. However, I improvised by eating another piece of fruit. I feel good. But I know I need to better prepare for the week. So, today I am going to cook chicken breasts, rice and squash in order to have it ready over the week.
Wish me luck.

In the beginning...

Hello there,

I've been lurking in blogland for a significant amount of time. And I've decided, that I am going to jump right in and tell all of the blogiverse about my experiences in terms of fitness and weightloss. I've been inspired by many of the incredible ongoing blogs that I have been reading. So first off I'd like to give a big thankyou to those awesome people who have been blogging about their experiences with fitness and weightloss for a long time. Thank you so much for allowing me into your life, even though you didn't always know I was there.

In anycase, I have been riding the attempt to get fit rollercoaster for about five or six years now. I go through these stages where I do really well, get mostly happy with the way I feel and look and then promptly fall off the wagon. I'm a lifetime member of weightwatchers. I'm at a point now where I'm fairly happy with my physique but would like to work on overall toning it up and getting to be more atheltic. So, my latest inspiration has come from Tosca Reno ..so I'm trying to change my lifestyle soas to eat clean and try to change the composition of my body. I've been cutting out processed food and trying some of the tips I've found out there in fitness blogland. This will be where I will keep track of the trials and tribulations I face while trying to get fit and eat clean. Lets see where this journey takes me.

That being said, I know from experience that you simply can't just have an amorphous goal. That won't work. It is too far out of reach. Given that I am a competitive person, (seriouly I don't play board games with people I like) I think that some goals would be awesome.

Kate's Goals for this week:

1. Do 30 minutes of cardio on the treadmill 6/7 days. (preferably in the morning)
2. Find the willpower to politely refuse non-clean food options offered to me.
3. Eat as clean as possible.

I think those are some pretty impressive goals. I also have some girls who come over to weight train bootcamp style two to three times a week. So..I know that the bootcamp will get done.

Speaking of the Angry Exgirlfriend's Workout Club, my boyfriend and I have been working on a cool project. We have been creating a little home Gym for us to use. Now, we have enough space for all four members of the club to work out. My devoted boyfriend has been incredibly supportive of all my endeavours to get fit and healthy. He thinks I'm crazy when I get down on myself and knows that I feel better about myself when I am in "I'm a work in progress" mode. So, he has worked very hard to help me make a great home gym in our basement. Here are the results:

This final one is of me and my cat stucco...just in case you couldn't see how big the space actually was. I'm so excited to use this space :)

Well, there you have it. This is the beginning.
